A description of Dill was discovered in a manuscript by the Roman surgeon and explorer Dioscorides. His practice manual De Materia Medica (AD 78), which became the first authoritative reference book on medicinal plants in Europe and has been in use for over 1700 years, indicated that Roman gladiators rubbed their skin with dill before each match in order to to reduce nervousness and anxiety over the fight.<\/p>\n
