Of course, you need to know information about the plant from which the essential oil is made.
The chemotype (XT) shows us that different types of Thyme have different chemical compounds, and therefore properties. This is because the plants have been grown in different climates and this has changed their chemistry.

Thyme chemotypes:

Common thyme – HT thymol – this plant contains a strong antiseptic and contains 60-70% thymol. Gathered in autumn.
Common thyme – HT linalol – this plant has the most delicate chemotype. Its properties are antiparasitic and fungicidal. Grows at high altitudes.
Thyme vulgaris – HT carvacrol – this herb contains a strong antiseptic, 30% carvacrol when harvested in spring. Plants harvested immediately after flowering or in autumn contain 60-80% carvacrol.
Thyme vulgaris – HT tuyanol – is a plant immune stimulant and balances hormones. Contains about 50% thuyanol regardless of when it grows. It can only be found in the wild.
Thyme vulgaris – HT alpha-terpineol – that plant has a slight smell of pepper, harvested in early spring.
Thyme vulgaris – HT geraniol is a lemon-scented plant harvested in autumn and grows at high altitudes.
Common thyme – XT 1.8 cineole – this plant is used for inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, as a diuretic, expectorant, analgesic and insect repellent. It contains 80-90% cineole. An interesting fact is that it has the same properties as Eucalyptus, which contains 70-75% cineole.
Common thyme – XT r-cymol – this plant must be harvested in the spring or it will belong to another chemotype – thymol XT. It is used to treat rheumatism and arthritis, an analgesic.
