Historical background: Sandalwood essential oil has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as an anti-inflammatory and anti-infective agent. The description of Sandalwood was first discovered in a manuscript by the Roman surgeon and explorer Dioscorides. His practical guide De Materia Medica (78 AD) became the first authoritative reference book on medicinal plants in Europe and has been in use for over 1700 years.
Research conducted at Brigham Young University has documented that Sandalwood essential oil can inhibit many types of breast, cervical, prostate, and skin cancer cells, even at low concentrations.
Medicinal properties: antitumor, antiviral, immunostimulant, antiseptic, stimulates the pineal gland, antidepressant, soothing, sedative, rejuvenating, eliminates sagging skin, restores dry skin and hair.
Sandalwood oil has a high level of sesquiterpenes, they stimulate the pineal gland and the limbic region of the brain – the center of emotions. The pineal gland is responsible for the production of melatonin, which is a powerful immune stimulant, antioxidant, and anticancer agent. This is why many people use Sandalwood as a natural sleep aid.
