General information:
Rue essential oil has a strong and bitter aroma. This plant is known as the “herb of grace” and the Romans called it the herb of Mars. However, in Ukraine Ruta has traditionally been a symbol of purity and virginity. And the adjective word “rutniy”, which is in some dictionaries, has the meaning “virgin”.
In ancient, traditional medicine, it was used during exorcisms and other spiritual rituals to ward off evil spirits. It was a protective herb.
Rue comes from a Greek word meaning “bitterly to regret”.
In medicine, rue is used for digestive problems, bronchial asthma and gallbladder problems, because rue is an antispasmodic.
Today, Rue essential oil is not widely used because its safety is of concern (read below) and it is very hard to find.
I would not recommend using rue essential oil on its own if you are just getting started with essential oils.
Most interesting piece of history?
Did you know that the Nazis developed a truth serum from Ruta during World War II?!
Medicinal properties: spasmolytic and relaxing.
Documented Benefits and Uses: Nervous disorders, occasional insomnia, stress relief, PMS (cramps), irregular periods, and more.
Spiritual and emotional impact:
Interestingly, ancient and modern definitions of rue include sadness, regret, and grief.
Therefore, it is no coincidence that this plant has been used for centuries to shed light on our own truth. This is especially true when regret and grief are so deeply rooted in the body that they begin to hide the truth from ourselves, to the point of complete self-denial.
Self-denial at this level occurs in situations of neglect or persecution, when the body and mind must suppress our memories (and truth) in order to survive.
Ruta helps us release this grief and embrace our spiritual path so that we can once again have paths to gain strength. Although sometimes it is difficult for us to face the truth or accept it, it is it that frees us energetically and allows us to move forward.
Influence on the mind: psychologically soothes and relaxes.
Chakras: Root (1) and heart (4) chakras expand.
Green color.
Application and dosage:
First, this oil should never be used undiluted or by mouth.
Personally, from what I have read and researched, I would probably only use rue in a professionally formulated mixture.
Also, finding a quality rue oil will be extremely difficult, and even then I’m not sure it’s safe to use it without heavy dilution or another balancing oil.
In this regard, please read the precautions below.
I know that the herb and/or extracts from it can be toxic when consumed, but usually the plant’s oil is different.
Essential oil constituents are generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) according to the FDA.
This leaves some confusion and uncertainty for oil users and my readers; therefore, I leave it up to the professionals to prepare any mixtures containing this oil.
Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have children should NOT use this oil. Ruta should not be used as a dietary supplement outside of a professional blend.
Ruta is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, so caution is advised when applied topically. Dilution required.
